This week President Trump announced a $500 Billion investment into artificial intelligence (AI). FIVE HUNDRED BILLION DOLLARS. I know what you are thinking. That’s a lot of money. Let’s get into it.

Who is giving the money?

Private companies OpenAI, Softbank, and Oracle are pooling money for the investment over the next four to five years. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will also provide funding.

What is the money for?

The group is planning to create another organization, Stargate. This new organization will establish infrastructure to further help with the growth of AI and related applications. The initial investment will be in data centers. Currently, they are constructing 10 data centers in Texas. Additionally, there is a potential for more energy generation since AI consumes a lot of electricity

If the money is all private, why is the President announcing it?

The government has an obvious interest in AI’s expansion whether for more jobs, or national security, or just making sure the US remains the world’s technology leader. This funding announcement may also be related to the energy emergency that the president also announced. Declaring the energy emergency allows the president to speed up some actions by relaxing some policies that might have otherwise slowed progress. The executive order could be used to speed up some energy projects that could benefit AI’s development. Some tech companies have gone so far as to plan their own nuclear power plants.

This amount of money is truly mind blowing to me. A $500 billion investment means that not only will AI development grow, but it will also be integrated in our lives in ways we hadn’t yet thought of. Maybe you heard Larry Ellison’s comments on how AI cameras could be used to make sure “citizens will be on their best behavior.” Hmmm.
